Diagnosing Diabetes

Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG)

This test requires a patient to fast for eight hours before having their blood sugar measured. If the patient’s fasting blood sugar level is between 100 and 125 mg/dL, they are considered to have an impaired fasting glucose (IFG). An IFG is a type of prediabetes that raises the risk for diabetes. A fasting blood sugar of 126 mg/dL or more may mean the patient has diabetes. While this test is relatively successful, it is not perfect.
