Breathing Troubles: Common Causes and Triggers

Tips To Improve Lung Health

Despite the variety of conditions that can influence short- and long-term respiratory issues, there are several lifestyle habits that can help reduce your risk of complications and improve both heart and lung health:

  • Quit smoking, if you haven’t already. Quitting smoking helps prevent further damage to your lungs and reduces the risk of developing COPD, pulmonary hypertension and lung cancer.
  • Exercise. Regular physical activity protects your heart and lung health by improving your body’s ability to process oxygen. Regular exercise also helps you reach and maintain a healthy weight.
  • Manage preexisting conditions. Conditions like asthma are rarely life-threatening if you follow your treatment plan and take medication as prescribed.
  • Avoid lung irritants. Follow air quality reports and plan around days with high levels of air pollution or allergy counts. Maintain a clean house free of dust, animal dander and heavy fragrances, as these may trigger respiratory issues.
