Breathing Troubles: Common Causes and Triggers
Heart disease is a broad term describing a variety of conditions that affect the cardiovascular system. Because of the heart’s role in the transfer of oxygen, many diseases that affect the cardiovascular system can lead to shortness of breath. Also, lung conditions like COPD and pulmonary hypertension force the heart to work harder to compensate for lung damage. Overtime, that extra work may weaken and even damage the heart. If you experience shortness of breath accompanied by chest pain, numbness, swelling of the legs or severe dizziness, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America and catching an abnormality early can improve treatment options and potentially save your life!
