Breathing Troubles: Common Causes and Triggers

Anxiety and Breathing Issues

It is normal to occasionally feel anxious, especially with looming obligations or other stressful life events. Severe and persistent anxiety, however, could be a sign of a mental disorder. When anxious thoughts and feelings become overbearing, the body may react by speeding up heartbeat, tensing muscles and causing rapid, shallow breathing. In some cases, these symptoms can make anxiety even worse, leading to panic and respiratory distress. Generally, these respiratory symptoms are temporary and don’t pose a serious health risk. However, anxiety can trigger more serious respiratory issues if combined with a preexisting condition like asthma or COPD. Talk to your doctor if chronic anxiety is disrupting your everyday life.
